Metal head - Group of musical listeners that are often described as drunkards, partiers, and fighters, but this is a bit of a stereotype. Metal heads often listen to classic rock along with blues rock, classical, and opera based music, since those 2 genres are the root of what rock music could be considered today and the dawn of all music. Metal heads tend to have a powerful dislike towards the close-minded and mainstream. The majority tend to be very liberal and anti-conservative, but not all of course. Metal lyrics are often quite political and have more meaning than what people say. Metal music is very often stereotyped as “ satanic devil related material” . This is the worst stereotype of them all and the reason many don’t give metal a chance. Metal lyrics also deal with independence, pride, and free will. The metal genre has more sub-genres that any other musical genre existing today. These genres are often known as classic metal, death metal, black metal, grind core, thrash metal, symphonic metal, opera metal, folk metal, Viking metal, industrial metal, progressive metal, power metal, etc etc. All are tied together in the same branch and all kick ass if I do say so myself. Way back when there was a rivalry between punks, metal heads, and skinheads. This rivalry has long since dwindled out and people have matured today ( for the most part ) . There is no particular attire, metal heads tend to dress however they damn well please and this is great. But many people believe the attire to be faded blue jeans with black band tee-shirts. Long and/or wavy type hair style usually passing the eyes. Metal heads don’t give a shit about what’s trendy or what other people wear and allow people to dress and express themselves as they please without bitching about it like many “ new generation punk rockers” do today.

All these definitions are bullshit. Metalheads do NOT follow a specific look or all listen to the same bands. What's considered "metal" is so diverse and open ended that there are tons of different types of metal heads. You've got your mainstream nu-metal/metalcore, thrash, death, black, power, grind, all of that kind of stuff, and everybody enjoys different kinds of metal outside of the mainstream metalheads and perceptions of them. You don't have to exclusively listen to Slayer, Metallica, or Cannibal Corpse. Hell, you don't even have to like any of the "classic" bands. You don't need to be a long haired, dim-witted delinquent either. Or drink/do drugs. You can dress however you want; you wouldn't be able to tell some metalheads apart from people who despise metal because they look the same. As long as you like some form of the metal spectrum, it's all good.

listen to whatever you like and don't be bound to to supposed "mandatory" metalhead bands. Explore as much metal as possible.

Many metalheads have been alienated as children or teenagers, and this has caused them to feel a great amount of sadness or anger, which has been cured by heavy metal. Because of this, most metalheads are accepting people.

Steve the metalhead: A 50-year-old heavy drinker who dresses in pastal colours most if the time and "normal" clothing who likes the smash things. Metal heads can be classified for long hair, black clothing and band tees BUT, not all metal heads look like this. Metalheads tend to dress however they want. They do enjoy heavier music to a great extent, but they choose not to dress according the [subculture] and are very open to all music. They do attend metal shows, but every gig that comes to the country isn't a [metal] must. Those people aren't metalheads, they're metal listeners. [check example 2]

Tend to drink often, and can be found air guitaring in public, with freinds, or at parties. They know true metal, and don't argue it. They are also the last people you'd want to fight. Have great hatred for "emo kids" and wiggers. 95% can play an instrument, and is also very loud due to almost constant screaming. They will do as they please and let no one tell them otherwise, also most are fearless.

Is often discriminated against by other metalheads for liking that music, and doesn't seem to know the difference between metal and emo. John the metalhead: 35 years old, with a family. He listened to metal as a kid, and while his hair might not be as long as it used to be, and he dresses more "average," he still loves to listen to bands like Judas Priest and Megadeth. Both thrash and [nu-metal] can be good in their own ways. There's no such thing as a "false metal" band. If it's metal, it's metal. Period. Who cares what genre [Slipknot] is in? Who cares if [Testament] is from the 80s? They're both metal, so it's not wrong for a metalhead to like them. I personally like both of them, so just stop the stupid debate of which bands are true and which are not. However, a metalhead may indeed despise such music as [rap], [pop], or [pop punk], for either being [mainstream], or full of shit. And most of it is. However, just because a band is mainstream does not specifically mean it sucks. So [System of a Down] appeared on [MTV]. Does that mean they're the worst thing to happen to music since [50 Cent]? No\! They're simply getting their music out to more people. If you really want to vent your anger out because a band is popular, go take it out on their stereotypical fans, for being such airheaded idiots and making the band look bad - not the band itself. As for the dress code, there is no set one. Most metalheads, however, can be characterized by either shoulder-length or shaven hair, leather jackets, band t-shirts, and lots of studs and spikes in their accessories. There is also no set way to behave in order to be a metalhead. You don't have to do drugs, you don't have to drink, and you don't have to be the toughest S.O.B. in the world who can demolish 20 asses in a fight. You can be a very friendly sweet person who hates fighting and still be a metalhead. Just be yourself, and listen to all the great metal you love. That, is what makes you a metalhead. Not taking drugs and ranting about true and false metal. That, is what you call an intentional conformist.

Be aware that listening to Metal doesn't make you a Metalhead, just like listening to punk rock doesn't make you a punk, and listening to rap doesn't make you a gangsta. A Metalhead is a person who has long hair, wears black band T-shrits and blue denim or khaki pants. For male Metalheads, it is also acceptable to be shaven bald, though long hair is preferable. For female Metalheads, known as [Metal Chick]s, denim or khaki skirts are acceptable. Steel-toed boots are preferable. Other accessories that are sometimes used are spiked wristbands or gauntlets, leather jackets, and denim jackets. The current generation of Metalheads take precedence over the Metalhead cultural guidelines and therefore decide what renders one as a poser. Common misconceptions about Metalheads is that they're gothic, or that they listen to Metalcore and Nu-Metal. Most Metalcore and Deathcore bands, including As I Lay Dying, Atreyu, Bullet for my Valentine, Bring Me the Horizon etc. are not acceptable in Metal Culture. Nu-Metal is not accepted as a legitimate form of Metal. Nu-Metal bands include Korn, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Disturbed, etc. And last of all, Gothic Metal bands like Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, His Infernal Majesty, etc. are despised in Metal culture. Items that render one as a poser in Metal include hair dye, any haircut that a conformist might have, brightly colored T-shirts. Eyeliner and nail polish are acceptable for Metal Chicks to wear as long as it doesn't look too Gothic.

To first understand a metalhead one has to understand that there are people who listen to metal and then there are people that live it as if it is their purpose for existing. The most important thing in their life is metal, music, and living the lifestyle. If you are someone that just listens to metal and doesn't truly understand the nature of a metalhead then you do not fit into this category. Metalheads are often loner anti-social types. Though some are lazy and uneducated, this does not go for many Metalheads who follow the ethos of strength and perserverence. Many older metalheads have lived a life being picked on and looked down upon, thus they tend to hit the gym and take up different fighting courses despite what many people believe. Otherwise, they're just born tough. They tend to work common working class jobs such as retail at Sears or Wal*Mart working in the back, or at warehouses loading and shipping equipment. Usually they'll go for a job that doesn't entitle the need for dealing with customers as Metalheads tend to pretty much hate everyone that isn't metal...unless you're an attractive broad that they desire, and then they pretend to like you so that they can get in your pants. Though anti-social, metalheads above all other forms of sub-culture tend to flock towards their brothers in metal. Your rank and merit within their counter-culture is based on your knowledge and dedication to the music. If you are a flake that just likes to listen to the band you are probably on the outskirts of the metal heiarchy. If you spend hours a day getting into the music, becoming part of the lifestyle by being in a band, supporting your local scene and knowing your share of metal scene in general, then you gain a lot of merit. Despite popular belief, metalheads do not look down on gangstas and rappers more than anything. They all tend to have one thing in common when it comes to hatred: their hatred for false metal and posuers who listen to false metal. Slipknot, KoRn, Disturbed, Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Papa Roach, amongst other Nu-Metal and Alternative bands are classified as false metal. Wearing all black and wearing make-up can quickly classify you as a false metalhead as well (unless you're doing it simply because you're black metal aka kvlt). In fact, many true metalheads will hate you no matter what or who you like just for mentioning you like Slipknot on basic principle. Simply put: Metalheads are militiant territorial and very openy biased toward any music or fans that they feel are encroching on their 'turf'. To quote one metalhead in particular: "In these times of heavy music most people under the age of twenty are pretty ignorant when it comes to metal. There are many that like the core bands like Priest, Maiden, Venom, etc, etc, but a lot of these people aren't true metalheads either. Sadly, most don't even listen to these core bands. We are plauged by false metalheads that run around with their stupid hair dos and make up and they are blasphemizing what metal truly is and stands for. When some kid that has no idea thinks metal is just a bunch of pussy kids that complain about their life and preach to Satan and smoke pot all day then I blame these pathetic fuckers that are ruining what made metal great. Besides, everyone knows that metalheads are more likely to be alcoholics then stoners. Unless you're listening to Saint Vitus or Electric Wizard or something." Metalheads tend to dress casuly. Denim jeans (black or blue), a band t-shirt, sneakers or boots, and a leather jacket or denim vest with patches of your favorite bands are the quintesential metal attire. In recent years camoflaughed pants, beige green khaikis, and flannel have been accepted as metal attire. Many metalheads have at least one leather bracelet spiked or unspiked to go with their outfit. Patches and pins are a major part of a metalhead's attire. The patched and pinned jacket goes a long way within the metal community. More so than a t-shirt that expresses a person's interest in one particular band, the jacket shouts out who and what you stand for because several bands can be added to the jacket. Some fans only have one or a few patches, but many go to great lengths and take up several hours looking for patches and pins. These people consider the jacket a part of them, and tend to take it with them everywhere. Metalheads tend to keep to natural hair color and prefer tattoos over piercings and other forms of body modifaction. They either grow their hair very long or simply shave it all off. Metalheads with short hair are rare, and if they do have short hair they are in the midst of growing it. Many metalheads look down on people with colored or fancy designed hair, as this is a sign that they listen to false metal. Remember, being a fan of false metal is a HUGE no-no. You can be the nicest person on the Earth and it won't mean a damn thing. False metal is for posuers, and all fakes deserve to be killed. Metalheads are quiet and tend not to get involved with others problems. They are not very trusting and tend not to care for anything outside their own little world. They are often anti-religious and against many forms of politics, but this does not mean they are not political. At shows, true metalers tend to prefer to be in the front row so that they can headbang to their favorite act or throw up the horned salute or a fist. Because of the blasphemization of the horns many metalers do not recognize it's use as a call sign. It has in recent years been replaced with a simple fist or "the claw". At shows metalers also have different formats of dancing. This was originaly circle pitting, skanking, and stage diving, but the immature nature of 1990's nu-metal has incorperated several other forms of moshing. Many true metalheads think that moshing is at it's best: silly. Nu-metal fans would argue otherwise, but remember that they do not have a credible opinion because they like nu-metal. They are very rebellious and place metal above all things. They will lose their job just to see a show that reeks of krieg (slang term used by metalheads to define something that is metal, great, etc) or lose their home because they're more interested in buying cd's and musical equipment. If you've lost your girlfriend because you spend too much time with your instruments then you're probably a true metalhead. If you've never even bothered with woman because you scare them all away with your hostility and your obsession with music then you are true metal.

Despite common opinion, there is a difference between a metalhead and a simple metal fan. A metal fan is simply someone who likes to listen to metal. A metalhead on the other hand is a dying breed of people that once made up a full blown countercultural movement of the 70s and 80s, but since has been worn down to a small and dispersed subculture. The internet has provided a great medium for metalheads to communicate through messageboards and forums about various metal groups both old and new. A metalhead is not only a fan of metal music, but is dedicated to the knowledge of groups, to appreciating the full depth of various metal music (which is EXTREMELY deep), and appreciating the diversity of metal. A lot of metal heads have an appreciation of classical and opera music as well, in fact studies show that metalheads and classical music listeners have similar personalities, especially when it comes to music. Contrary to stereotypes, there is no specific ideology or fashion for metalheads. Some may wear a suit and tie every day and carry a briefcase, some will dress stereotypically with worn out jeans, band t shirts of various bands they like, and grown out hair/beards. As for ideology, metalheads are normally diverse in their ideologies, although it is common to see one that's has a more apathetic ideology.

They never smile in pictures and headbang when they listen to music with headphones. For entertainment, they like to poke people in the emotional spots that hurt the most to feel satisfied about their lack of achievement in their metal obsessed lives. They often play weirdly shaped, ugly, angular black guitars with almost non-existant necks (see: BC Rich) through crappy solid state modeling amps like Line 6's. They also think that high output pickups are the only pickups that sound good.
